Detectives hunting arsonists who put a blazing rag through a letterbox say the entire street could have gone up in flames.
The arsonist targeted the property in Arthur Street, one of the oldest in the port, in the early hours of Saturday and although the flames didn’t take hold, police are determined to track down those responsible.
Due to the close proximity of the houses, the fact that they are terraced and on a narrow road, police say the whole street could have gone up in flames.
Luckily the occupants of the house were out at the time and only found the cloth when they returned home.
Police have now launched an investigation to find those responsible and establish why the house was targeted.
Sgt Daniel Whitaker from Fleetwood Neighbourhood Team said: “This offence has taken place in a single lane narrow street with terraced properties on each side.
“If the flame had taken hold the consequences would have been devastating.”
Frightened residents have spoken of their horror that such a mindless act had happened on their doorsteps.
