THE devastated family of murdered mum-of-two Claire Atkinson has been left distraught after a callous thief stole a memorial from her grave.

The 31-year-old’s grieving parents, Grenville and Kath Atkinson, say they took comfort from placing memorials at her grave after her death and are disgusted by the thief’s lack of respect.

Claire was brutally stabbed to death by her estranged partner in April 2009.

Her family had placed two heart shaped memorials, which are made from pottery and bear an inscription, at the grave’s headstone in the garden of remembrance at St Peter’s Church on Lord Street.

But now one of the tributes has been removed.

Mr Atkinson, 57, of Seabank Road, Fleetwood, said: “We are all so upset by this.

“I am utterly disgusted that someone should show such a lack of respect, it’s just despicable.

“It’s a sad day when you can’t even leave a memorial tribute in a churchyard without someone stealing it.”

“I know it may sound like a small issue to some people, but it’s very upsetting.”
