Drink driver '˜fled club in car after threats'

A man chased from a club by a group of men jumped into his car and drove off after drinking, a court has been told.

Adam Brooks’ behaviour was then tipped off to police by one of the men, who had threatened him, magistrates heard.

Brooks,a 36-year-old electrician, of The Esplanade, Fleetwood, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was banned from the road for 20 months, fined £120 with £40 costs and ordered to pay £30 victims’ surcharge by Blackpool magistrates.

Prosecuting, Martine Connah, said police received information the driver of a Volkswagen Golf had been drinking on May 15 at 12.28am. Police saw Brooks drive the car along The Esplanade and park up.

A breath test showed he was more than twice over the limit with 83 micrograms of alcohol in his body – 35 is the limit.

David Charnley, defending, said Brooks had gone to a Hambleton club and had no intention of driving, but there was an incident at the club and he was threatened and chased by a group of men.

He got into his car and drove off to escape.

Mr Charnley added: “There was no criticism of his driving.

“No doubt one of the men who chased him contacted the police.

“My client was a self-employed electrician but he may have to look for other work.

“He will have a double whammy because of his foolish judgement on the day in question.”
