Crews were called to the fire at around 6.20pm on 22 February at St George's United Church on Plymouth Road.

Fire officers arrived to find the fire had already been extinguished by a member of the public using a dry powder extinguisher.

Crew Manager Andrew Jones said: "We were called to a suspicious fire in a ground floor disabled toilet at a Slimming World Meeting at St George's Church.

"When we arrived we found that a large amount of toilet paper had been stuffed behind piping and set on fire.

"Fortunately a member of the public managed to extinguish the fire before it spread."

A joint investigation has now been launched by the police and fire services.

There is no suggestion that any of the participants of the Slimming World meeting started the fire.
