Josh Atkinson from Fleetwood is about to become a familiar face around the port and indeed the Fylde coast.
It’s all because the 23 year old is the new cover star of Blackpool and The Fylde College’s School Leavers Guide for 2016.
It’s very strange seeing myself on the cover of the prospectus
The glossy prospectus is hot off the shelves and will soon be distributed to 12,000 school leavers across Blackpool, Wyre, Fylde and beyond ahead of 2016 enrolment.
Josh’s own success story makes him a good advert for the college and he hopes his own story can inspire the next generation of young engineers.
The ex-Cardinal Allen pupil completed Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships in Mechanical Engineering with B&FC and has now been taken on at the college as an employee.
He currently oversees the assembly and maintenance of course apparatus at the Fleetwood Nautical Campus Fire Training Ground.
Josh was ready and waiting to open the first box when the delivery arrived at Blackpool and The Fylde College this week, and he said: “It’s very strange seeing myself on the cover of the prospectus.
“I like it though – the design team have done a good job with the pictures. Of course I’ll be taking a few copies back to work to show my colleagues!”
The college had over 20,000 students through its doors in the previous academic year - a large choice for that cover role.
But B&FC decided that Josh fitted the bill perfectly this year.
More and more school leavers are going down the apprentice route, seeing it as a way to learn skills that offer a good chance of getting a job at the end of training.
Josh, whose family has strong ties with Fleetwood’s once-thriving fishing industry, believes he made the right choice after leaving high school.
He hoped to get a job after completing his training - and has managed just that,
The college’s marketing manager, Kristine Murray, said: “Josh completed Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships in Mechanical Engineering with B&FC and he is now helping to inspire the next generation of engineers at the Fleetwood Nautical Campus, so he was the ideal cover star for us.
“We’re opening our new Advanced Technology Centre at the Bispham Campus imminently and we were granted STEM Assured Status earlier this year for our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths provision, so we wanted the prospectus to reflect this.
“It’s a great cover!”
