Each year, the club captain chooses a designated charity to support and one of the causes that touched the heart of the current incumbent Joyce Wright was that of youngster Blake McMillan, who lives in Scotland and suffers from MECP2 Duplication Syndrome, a debilitating childhood neurological disease, which is life-threatening.

Joyce got to learn of Blake’s condition as her daughter Rosie Hynd is a senior staff nurse at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and looks after Blake on his frequent visits there.

This prompted Joyce to decide to make this her designated charity for the year, as well as Alzheimer’s research.

In all £5,888 was raised for the two worthy causes.

Money will go for research into MECP2 Duplication Syndrome.

Knott End member Elaine Blackburn said: “Blake is five-years-old next month.

“His mum Jenny set up the trust to help other children and hopefully be in time to help Blake as there was nothing in place.

“They are about two years away from clinical trials, hopefully to find a cure.

“Joyce’s daughter was talking about Blake when she was visiting Rosie and she thought as she was going to be lady captain it would be a good thing for her to choose as her charity.”
