“Wembley will put this town back on the map.”
That was the message today from traders ahead of Fleetwood Town FC’s trip to the capital for possibly the biggest game in the club’s history.
All eyes will be on Fleetwood and Burton when they kick off in the League 2 play-off final on Monday, with images of the port being beamed on to television sets across the country.
Businesses in the town say the media exposure so far has done wonders for Fleetwood and are hoping Monday’s match will help raise its profile even further.
Craig McOmish, whose seafront Beach Kiosk has already featured on ITV and Sky Sports News in the run-up to the final, said the attention can only be good for business.
He said: “I think it is excellent for the town as a whole to be getting this TV exposure. It’s brilliant.
“At the end of the day, we are proud of Fleetwood’s sea front but a lot of people don’t even know it’s there. So hopefully this will put it in the spotlight a bit more.
“Overall I think this game is good for Fleetwood and we are all behind them.
“We are flying the flag at the kiosk.
“It’s amazing how many people come up and say they have seen us on TV. We got good feedback for it.
“It is a very exciting time and all the exposure is absolutely brilliant.”
Alan Marsh, chairman of Fleetwood Town Council, said the timing could not be better for the town.
He said: “It doesn’t get much better than this.
“We have got investment in the seafront and Memorial Park – this is the icing on the cake.
“It is something that puts Fleetwood where it belongs on the map so good luck to the team.
“This is as it should be. For a small town we are not doing badly at all and long may it continue.”
Derek Eaton, chairman of the Fleetwood Chamber of Trade, said he is hoping the cameras pick up on the great things the port has to offer.
He said: “I wish there were more pictures of the sea front. So far the focus has been on the football.
“But as a result it does put Fleetwood on the map and that can only be helpful.”
