An article in the Weekly News inspired fund-raising civil servants to raise a bumper sum for a cancer charity.

The Veterans’ Agency at the Norcross Site, Thornton, raised £487.50 for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation.

Anne Bradshaw, from Fleetwood, organised a cake sale and sold gifts which had been donated by the community, to ensure her close friend did not have to travel away for chemotherapy treatment.

Miss Bradshaw said: “When I read in the Weekly News that Rosemere was helping to fund cancer treatment in Fleetwood, which meant patients and families wouldn’t have to travel out of the town, I decided to help.

“When you see a close friend travelling a long way to receive this important treatment you realise how important local provisions are.

“As Lancashire and South Cumbria’s local cancer charity, it is really important we support them.”

Laura Stephenson, area fundraising coordinator for Blackpool and the Fylde Coast’s Rosemere, said: “We’ve set ourselves a target of raising a sum of £1m by April 2012. This is a big help.”
