A Fleetwood Scout group has been given £5,000 by a bank – and it’s not a loan.

The 1st Fleetwood unit received the cash from the Santander UK Foundation, which supports local communities by providing cash for charies and youth groups.

Most of the money is to be spent on upgrading the kitchen at the group’s St John Avenue base, as well as camping equipment and help with running costs.

Group scout leader, Belinda Armstrong, told the Weekly News: “It will make a great deal of difference.

“Our kitchen units are 20 years old and were second hand when we got them. They are starting to look battered and the worse for wear. We heard that Santander was offering money to help local communities and we filled in a form and a sent it off.

“Without this, we would not have been able to sort our kitchen out - and it needs it more than every because we currently have a large intake.”

The group’s Beaver Scouts (six to eight years) meet on Tuesdays at 6pm-7.15pm, Cub Scouts (eight to 10 and a half) meet Thursdays at 6.30pm and Scouts (10 and a half to 14 and a half) meet on Wednesdays at 7pm to 9pm. Places are limited at the moment but the unit does need more volunteers.

Belinda added: “We can always do with an extra pair of hands, including help with our shop on London Street.”

New helpers must be CRB-checked. Phone Belinda on (01253) 877818.
