A bumper £23m will be spent on repairing Lancashire’s roads, footpaths and cycle routes in the next financial year, with Fylde and Wyre residents among those set to benefit.

Spending plans for the multi-million pound repair and maintenance fund were given the go-ahead by Lancashire County Council cabinet member Coun John Fillis.

We’ve started to move from a worst first approach to a more preventative approach

Some £20.5m will go on highway maintenance, £1.7m on pothole repairs and prevention work, another £1m on road safety projects and £250,000 will be spent on structural repairs to the public rights of way network.

Winners include residents of and visitors to Lytham where £213,759 will be spent on a Ballam Road project, inlaying the stretch of the road from Westby Street to Cedar Lodge.

Another £191,646 will be spent on Blackpool Road in Lytham, inlaying the B5261 from Albany Road to Commonside.

While in Wyre £ 195,331 will go to resurface the stretch of Garstang Road from Ambleside to Crawley Farm and £151,105 will go to resurface Stanah Road from the junction of Hillylaid Road to Underbank Road. In Fylde West £50,444 will pay to surface dress part of Preston New Road.

A rolling programme of work over a number of years is intended to ensure the county’s roads stay in good order.

Mike Kirby, director of corporate commissioning, said plans are guided by three key factors -the increase in traffic, the increase in extreme weather conditions and the impact of reduced funding. He said: “We’ve started to move from a worst first approach to a more preventative approach.”

As part of the surface dressing programme for the county’s A, B and C roads £10,225 will be spent on Back Lane in Fylde West on the section from Holybush Farm to Weeton Road. In Wyre the carriageway on School Lane will be resurfaced from Damside to Smallwood Hey Road at a cost of £ 71,253.

Just over £1m is being spent on rural unclassified roads. Schemes include £119,164 in Bradshaw Lane in Fylde West retreading the route from the M55 bridge to the A585 Fleetwood Road and £18,012 surface dressing Backsands Lane from the A588 to Damside, Wyre. Other projects include £21,744 retreading Horse Park Lane from Garstang Road to Lancaster Road.

The footways programme lists eight Wyre projects and three Fylde projects, including £49,140 resurfacing Lytham’s Stanley Road footway and £62,961 resurfacing Scafell Road in St Annes North.

A £3m bridge programme includes £25,000 to prepare a scheme to reconstruct the Peel Road bridge at Westby with Plumptons and £96,200 for concrete repairs and parapet repainting at Kepple Lane, Garstang.
