Prince’s Trust transforms library garden

IT’S all down to team work!
Members of Team 26 from the Prince’s Trust have transformed an overgrown plot at the rear of Fleetwood’s Central Library into a lovely outdoor reading area.
Gone are the unsightly weeds poking from concrete and the long, untidy grass.
Now there are smart wooden benches and seats they made themselves, and attractive plants.
And on one wall is an impressive mural capturing a Fleetwood seafront scene, with the Mount Pavilion overlooking the sea.
The work on the garden was a community project, just part of a 12-week course these young people are involved with.
They have already enjoyed an outward bound residential course. Next comes work placement with businesses in the Fleetwood and Wyre area.
The Prince’s Trust runs a range of training programmes and provides mentoring support for people aged 16 to 25, many of who are not currently in work or training but have plenty of potential.
The garden space was unveiled by the chairman of Lancashire County Council, Coun John Shedwick, during a special reception event at the library.
Coun Shedwick said: “This is a magnificent effort from these young people.
“As vice chairman of the Lancashire Combined Fire Authority, I have always supported the Prince’s Trust.
“We have specially designated personnel from the fire and rescue service working hard with the police to help deliver the Prince’s Trust courses.
“When you see this kind of achievement, it shows how worthwhile it is.”
Dawn Spooner, branch manager of Fleetwood Library, added: “What they have done is brilliant.
“They sourced the materials, designed the area, made the furniture, did the planting and one of them painted the wonderful mural.
“Now we have an outdoor reading area that individuals and schools can enjoy.”
PCSO Linda Stackhouse, on secondment from Fleetwood Police, is running the course and said: “They are a great team to work with.
“In this garden, they have created something from nothing.”
Team 26 are: Ricky Wilcock, 19, from Fleetwood; Daniel Turner, 17, from Fleetwood; Alix Bates, 24, from Thornton; Robbie Cowell, 16, from Fleetwood; Jack Morgan, 16, from Fleetwood; Rachel Whittington, 16, from Fleetwood; Jermaine Malam, 19, from Fleetwood; Nathan Burgess, 17, from Fleetwood; Dave O’Hara, 30, from Blackpool; Rory Gannon, 23, from Poulton; Marcus Edwards, 19, from Fleetwood; Chloe Fallows, 20, from Fleetwood; Rebecca Bracewell, 17, from Thornton.
Jermaine Malam said: “I’ve liked working as a team on a worthwhile project, seeing it all come together.”
And Rebecca Bracewell added: “Being on the Prince’s Trust has been brilliant. It has really boosted my confidence.”
