Music Review: The Soldiers, Marine Hall, Fleetwood
The Soldiers
The Soldiers marched into Fleetwood and captured the hearts of a reasonably-sized audience with a well-received performance.
While it is probably true to say they are more professional soldiers than professional entertainers, their efforts were full of energy, emotion and enthusiasm.
Their performance has certainly become more pop orientated than when they started out with albums like Coming Home and I’ve Got a Message for You.
The trio – Sergeant Major Gary Chilton, Colour Sergeant Richie Maddocks and Lance Corporal Ryan Idzi (who made it through to the X Factor boot camp) – included numbers by Queen, Robin Gibb, Van Morrison, Marty Pellow and Tom Jones.
They were backed by a very professional band, led by musical director Toby Chapman, and featured a terrific lead guitarist Peter Honore.
The Soldiers are supporting armed forces charities and give up their leave time to tour and make their recordings.
Toronto born singer/songwriter Josh Taerk did a most enjoyable opening spot, singing mainly own songs with strong melodies and storylines.
