IT was the perfect finish to a fabulous season.
Fleetwood Town finished top of the Unibond Premier League – and were crowned league champions – after drawing 1-1 at home to Frickley Athletic in front of a bumper 2,660 home crowd.
The result was enough for Fleetwood to win outright promotion bec
ause close rivals Witton Albion, lurking menacingly in second place, amazingly lost 0-3 at home to Worksop.
Fleetwood striker Steve Foster scored around the half hour mark after running onto a forward punt and outpacing the Frickley defenders before firing home.
But within five minutes the visitors were level with a soft goal which seemed to trickle into the Fleetwood net.
And the Fleetwood fans had to endure a scrappy game as Tony Greenwood's men struggled to light up the big occasion with any fluid football.
But any fears about the final result were lessened when news came through that Witton were losing.
Finally there was jubilation when, after almost seven minutes of added time at the end, the referee finally blew the whistle.
There was a massed pitch invasion by local youngsters – and the club now prepare for life in the Blue Square North League, with ambitious plans being made ready to further improve Highbury Stadium.
The only disappointment on the day was an injury to Town's Phil Robinson, who suffered a fractured arm in the first half and was later taken to hospital.
Town vice chairman Phil Brown said|: "We're absolutely thrilled to finish top and the crowd were fantastic.
"It wasn't the greatest performance by us today but the result is the main thing.
"Phil Robinson's injury just takes the gloss off things, but it is a great achievement for Fleetwood Town Football Club."
