THERE has been massive support for the concept of a Fleetwood town council from local people, says the group behind the plan.
Members of the Fleetwood Action Group have visited all fives wards in the town in the past week to collect signatures on a petition.
The group needs 2,000 signatures from local residents to begin the process of trying to set up a town council – an
d they are well on their way to getting them.
And Action Group activist Alan Marsh said: "The response is very encouraging. I would say some 95 per cent of the people we have spoken to are supportive of the formation of a Fleetwood Town Council.
"We need to collect 2,000 signatures and up to now we have over 1,200.
"We can't call at every door in Fleetwood but we are calling at a range of houses in each electoral ward. The Action Group would like to thank everybody who is helping to collect the signatures and the people who have signed the petition.
"We are now making every effort to get the remaining 800 signatures by the end of August.
"These signatures are then given to Wyre Council who carry out a community governance review."
Although the town council would not have the same powers as Wyre, supporters of the idea say that money raised for it from council tax can be used to improve the town in various ways.
One idea is that it could provide extra cleaning up of the streets or public toilets.
They also argue that it would give the town an additional voice on issues that really mattered to local people, and Wyre Council would need to consult it on planning matters.
