Should a barrage be built across the River Wyre?
The scheme: The facts
THIS week, the Fleetwood Weekly News is seeking to gauge local opinion about an ambitious £200m scheme.
The group which is trying to set up an ambitious tidal barrage scheme at the mouth of the River Wyre says it is still committed to making it happen.
But FREE 2008 believes that before the scheme can become reality, there must be strong enough public opinion behind the idea to show there is a will from the local community.
Edward Greenwood said: "We would need the backing of the borough and county councils for the tidal barrage scheme to happen, and we would also require funding of around £250,000 for a feasibility study.
"There are a number of possible sources for that funding. If we get that, and the survey is good, then we will look at backers for the scheme itself.
"But even before that, we would need to show that the local population was behind it – or not, if that was the case."
FREE 2008 was given the cold shoulder by energy giants Eon in March but Mr Greenwood said they had been undeterred.
