THE recent announcement that the Isle of man Steam Packet Company is to run the ferry again is welcome news. But why stop at a one-off, why not make it a regular service?
Such a service would provide bilateral benefits to both Fleetwood and Man.
People visiting the town bring money and they spend money.
But let's widen the picture here a little, let's reopen the railway and offer a direct rail connection to the Isle of Man and Ireland, via the port of Fleetwood.
Someone in London could get on a train and get the ferry to Man and/or Ireland.
Stopping off in Fleetwood would bring cash benefits to the local economy.
The same would apply to travellers from Man/ Ireland.
Whilst going to and from Man or Ireland, travellers could be induced to stop off in our friendly town to do some shopping at Freeport.
Putting Fleetwood back on the map as a destination for the Isle of Man would be a great start to regenerate its economy and also heighten the area’s profile as a destination.
It doesn't take much imagination, but it does take political will to see this through. Now are there any takers?
