PLANS are under way to form a fund-raising group to ensure Fleetwood can get Christmas lights this year.
PLANS are under way to form a fund-raising group to ensure Fleetwood can get Christmas lights this year.
Wyre Council is looking at changes to the way it funds the lights in a bid to help local communities like Fleetwood.
The council looks likely t
o set aside £3,000 each for Fleetwood, Cleveleys, Poulton and Garstang to help cover the costs of the lights.
A special festive lights task group has been set by Wyre to look into the plans, and local councillors from those four areas would help set up a committee in their towns to raise the extra cash needed.
A meeting of Wyre's Cabinet is to be held on May 22 to ratify the funding plans.
Councillor Tony Condron, chairman of the task group, said: "I hope the Cabinet will agree to the new system, which I think is more helpful than the old match-funding method."
Fleetwood councillor Malcolm Ratcliffe is a local representative on the task group and is hoping to set up a fund-raising committee in Fleetwood. He wants local people to contact him if they want to get involved.
Coun Ratcliffe said: "I have already spoken to one or two people who have some intresting ideas.
"I want to here from more local people as soon as possible."
The sum Fleetwood would need to raise would depend on how ambitious the lighting scheme is, but a relatively modest display may still cost between £2,000 and £3,000.
Among those who are keen to help is Fleetwood man Tommy Couch, who has suggested money-spinners such an pin badges, local rock concerts or a picnic on the Mount.
Coun Ratcliffe hopes a meeting can be arranged soon at a Fleetwood venue to discuss plans to set up the Christmas lights fund-raising committee. He also hopes to hear from any organisation with fund-raising experience.
Those interested can contact him on (01253) 876931.
