Masterplan 'a scam' for 'selling off the seafront'

WYRE'S ruling Conservatives have hit back at claims the Fleetwood Masterplan is a scam to sell of the town's assets.
Fleetwood's waterfront area is still identified for possible development, despite massive public opposition during consultation last year.

Wyre's cabinet has adopted a revised plan agreeing that the waterfront is "a major development opportunity for a mixed-use scheme".

Although there are no definite plans at present, Labour group leader Clive Grunshaw said: "It is there in black and white, they have identified this area as a major development opportunity for a mixed-use scheme.

"In plain English this means leisure – which is there already – plus residential development. This whole scheme has been a scam by Wyre Tories to sell off more of Fleetwood's assets but it has been put on hold until 'the market recovers.'

But the ruling Conservatives have denied the claims.

Leader Coun Russell Forsyth said: "There is absolutely no money to develop anything like that. We are leaving that aside and trying to develop other parts of the town if we can.

"When the economic situation resolves itself we will look again at that and go through the same process, involving the general public.

"Public consultation is widespread in Fleetwood and is listened to."

A major aspect of the plan is regeneration in the town centre and the council is currently in confidential talks with possible investors.

There is also a consultant's report on a new fish park to house the town's thriving fish-processing industry, possibly to the south of the docks.

The council is also preparing a bid for government Sea Change funding to help regenerate coastal areas.
