Extraordinary meeting called to discuss street drinking
AN EXTRAORDINARY meeting of the council has been called for Monday to discuss the introduction of 'Designated Public Places Orders for Fleetwood and neighbouring town centres.
Wyre's Labour group wholly support these proposals to ensure the police are given the tools to do their job in tackling anti-social behaviour caused by drinking alcohol in the streets.
Designated Public Places Orders will prohibit the drinking of alcohol in areas where there has been a history of nuisance and anti-social behaviour associated with the consumption of alcohol.
Once an order is made the police can order individuals not to consume alcohol and to surrender any found in their possession.
Failure to comply is an offence.
Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Clove Grunshaw said: "We are delighted to see, at long last, progress being made on the introduction of Designated Public Places Orders.
"Drinking on the streets has become an increasing problem over recent years and we need to support the police and PCSO's in the efforts that they are making to combat this nuisance."
"The one change in the proposal that we would like to see is to extend the areas covered to include the whole of Warren ward so that the nuisance caused in the town centre and Memorial Park is not just displaced to these areas."
Coun. Ron Shewan, deputy leader of the Labour Group added:
"Drinking on the streets in Fleetwood town centre and the Bold Street area has become an ongoing problem. These measures should make a real difference to safeguard the peace of residents. Mention should also be made of the Bold Street Residents Association and Fleetwood Civic Society who have lobbied hard for these orders to come into force."
