FLEETWOOD'S biggest maritime event is being staged this Saturday – and local folk have a chance to play their part.
The annual Fleetwood Lifeboat Day is one the most important fund-raising events in the service’s calendar.
Funds raised from last year’s fun-packed event, combined with the 2007 Wreck Treck, reached its target of £10,000.
The lifesaving service
is voluntarily run and relies on donations and events such as Lifeboat Day.
One of the main co-ordinators, Lifeboatman Dave Butler, said: “The support we get each year is phenomenal and we hope this year’s Lifeboat Day can be a big success again.”
This year’s event includes a string of fun activities for the public, including a rare chance to look at the Lifeboat vessel and see it in action.
Decorated
There is also a sailpast of decorated yachts from Fleetwood’s marina.
The big day starts with the mayoral launch of the lifeboat at 11am.
Events also include a welly throwing competition; the Lifeboat crew in stocks – a great opportunity to throw sponges at them; a chance to dress as a lifeboat man and have your picture taken; lifeboat tours and station tours; a water-based lifeboat display; sailpast display from the marina starting at 1pm and Fleetwood Folk Group singing and playing their instruments.
There will also be a tombola, a bouncy castle, face painting, stalls and refreshments which will be available throughout the day.
And in the evening there will be a social fundraiser at Fleetwood Conservative Club on Lowther Road from 7.30pm onwards, including a hotpot supper, disco and raffle.
Tickets cost £5 and are available from the station or on the door.
