SCHOOL children in Fleetwood are risking their lives by 'playing chicke' with cars on busy Broadway.
A minority of youngsters are deliberately challenging motorists by walking in front of cars and forcing them to slow down or stop.

Concerned grandmother Marian Cross raised the issue after reading our front page story last week.

We publicised t
he efforts of Fleetwood Sports College to have the traffic speed on Broadway reduced from 40 miles per hour to 30 for the safety of pupils.

Since then Cardinal Allen RC High School has expressed support for the other school’s campaign, as has Mrs Cross.

But she said: “Before any campaign for a reduction in speed, it is essential to educate the children of the consequences if they continue to risk their lives.

“Some pupils at the Sports College are playing ‘chicken’ with cars on Broadway and deliberately walk out in front of moving vehicles.

“Then they slowly continue their journey across the road, all the time staring virtually ‘daring’ the driver to knock them down!”

Fleetwood Sports College head teacher Stephen Roe said: “I know there are some children who don’t comprehend the dangers of crossing busy roads.

“We are aware of it and have taken steps to get the message across. Firstly we have brought in a theatre company to present a hard-hitting play about this very subject.

“We have also helped our own drama pupils to present their own play to junior schools about traffic dangers.”

The school’s campaign to reduce the speed on Brodaway , which is still ongoing, has been backed by Cardinal Allen where head teacher Phil Mooney said: “I agree the road needs to be changed to 30. Any step which makes life safer for all local children has my full support.”
