A victory over Celtic must feature among the career highlights of any Scot working in football – and Fleetwood manager Micky Mellon can claim that prized scalp after he guided the club's Under-18s to a 2-1 victory the Hoops' Under-19s in a friendly at AFC Blackpool on Friday.
Mellon said: "We can't underestimate just how big that result is for our kids. They deserve a tremendous amount of credit.
"Celtic were more than matched throughout and that is something I thought I would never say, so I'm a very proud man."
"We fielded a number of 16-year-olds and that gave some of the Celtic players three years head start."
The Town team included one older head in the form of striker Gareth Seddon, who netted the winner after Mark France opened the scoring.
Huddersfield loan defender Leigh France also had a first run-out with his new club.
Mellon added: "Gareth will be the first to say there are no excuses but he has struggled in the transition from full-time to part-time football.
"He's a full-time footballer and it's a difficult switch. It's been a massive adjustment for him but next season we'll be able to meet his fitness demands and put him back on track along with the rest of the squad.
"Leigh was absolutely terrific. He was everything I expected and more. He was organised and did everything we wanted
"Mark France could have played for Celtic, that's how good a performance he put in. I don't think they've come up against anything like him."
