A BUSINESS leader has urged Fleetwood residents to use Lord Street shops or risk losing them.
Some shops have seen takings plummet owing to ongoing tram works.

The roadway from Fisherman's Walk to Mount Street has been cordoned off with only pathways left accessible.

After a meeting of the town's chamber of trade, chairman Coun Mike Sanderson said: "Many people thought there should be more publicity to say shops were open as usual."

Coun Sanderson, who owns an electrical store, added: "We are struggling but we're ticking over. But I know some of the smaller places are really living hand-to-mouth. There is a threat some businesses will close if something isn't done to help."

Representatives of Lancashire County Council and contractor BAM Nuttall had been at the meeting but were unable to offer much assistance other than to say the works would not take as long as previously expected.

There was also the prospect of a reduction in business rates.
Coun Sanderson said: "I spoke to the valuation officer for Fleetwood.

He has already been to survey the site and was quite sympathetic. He says there is a possibility but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

"But it won't amount to very much if you take the small percentage for the period the road is going to be closed off."

Emma McLeod, manager of Steals Clothing in the old Woolworth building on Lord Street, added: "In the past few weeks sales have plummeted.

People can't see we're open and it's so hard to get to the shop."

Staff member Sarah Hewitt said: "We have cut the price of the majority of clothing down to £2 just to get customers in.

"The place is deserted. I don't think there are enough signs saying businesses are open as usual."
