Tram’s on track

A REAL DIAMOND: How the tram would look with The Queen on board.

A REAL DIAMOND: How the tram would look with The Queen on board.

THIS Fleetwood-bound tram will play a special role in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations – thanks to inmates at Kirkham Prison.

When it is finished, the vehicle will be done up in the traditional cream and green livery of the Fylde coast’s buses and trams with added lettering, artwork and lights to mark the 60th anniversary.

The first stage of its restoration has been organised by the Fleetwood Leisure Heritage Trust which got HMP Kirkham involved to help with the work.

Brian Mayne, of the National Offender Management Service at the prison, said: “Once we started stripping it down there were bits of metalwork which needed replacing so the job has taken longer than we hoped but it’s almost in a state for the painting to start.

“But even in its current state it’s looking good.”

Special lighting effects being created by Blackpool’s Illuminations team will include a moving image of The Queen in the driver’s window.

John Woodman, of the Fleetwood Heritage Trust, said: “The tram will also feature a series of murals and designs created by students at Fleetwood High School, Cardinal Allen RC Catholic High School and Blackpool and The Fylde College.”

The vehicle will go on display as part of Blackpool Illuminations and afterwards it will be moved to the planned Fleetwood Tram Museum on Copse Road – the first tram to enter the depot building since the building’s closure back in 1963.
