FLEETWOOD’S Lifeboat crew has been awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The serving crew received the prestigious medal for their work as an emergency service in the voluntary sector.
To mark the Jubilee, the official medal was handed to thousands of people in the Armed Forces and emergency services who risk their own lives in the line of duty.
Peter Woodworth, Chairman of Fleetwood RNLI said: “The RNLI is a charity that receives no UK government funding, we rely on the voluntary contributions of our donors and crew.
“The long service of these individuals illustrates their exemplary commitment to the very best traditions of the RNLI.
“Thanks goes not only to our crew but also to their employers and families without whose considerable support and understanding our work would simply not be possible.”
The crew were presented with the medals by Sandra Calvert who lost her husband Stephen in a helicopter crash in Morecambe Bay in 2006.
Paul Ashworth, Fleetwood lifeboat coxswain added: “Mrs Calvert awarded the medals at a short ceremony.
“She has been an enthusiastic supporter and fundraiser of Fleetwood Lifeboat for the past six years since the tragic death of her husband.
The medals were given to 450,000 people and were also awarded in some of the Commonwealth countries too.
Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt launched the medals and said it was right to reward those people who, like The Queen, also dedicate their lives to public good and who represent the very best of the British spirit.
The Fleetwood Lifeboat team are now gearing up for the biggest fundraising day of the year.
Friday is SOS day and the crew are opening the station to members of the public to have a look at the facilities to see at first hand the superb lifeboat vessels.
Paul added: “The Last Friday in January is traditionally the RNLI’s biggest fund-raising day.
“We will be open to visitors from 10 am until 3 pm, so visitors can have a look around and see the lifeboats and meet some of the crew.
