The giant 1.5m Supergrid transformer moves in at Stanah.

A 170 TONNE electricity transformer has completed a 8,000 mile journey from South Korea to Stanah.

The £1.5m transformer was delivered to Stanah substation on Sunday morning.

Work is now under way to install the transformer, to provide electricity for homes across the Fylde coast.

Bryan Martin, Electricity Alliance North site manager, said: “We’re strengthening the ring around Blackpool. Locals are starting to appreciate it’s quite a bit of construction work now they’ve seen the size of the thing.”

A team of 30 staff, from National Grid, Siemens, Murphys and PB Power, are now installing the transformer on site, including putting in vibration pads to minimise noise.

Site managers forecast an “energisation date” of November 16 this year.

The transformer is only the second of its kind, built by Hyundai in South Korea, to be installed in the UK.

Management said the transformer was needed to replace old equipment at the Stanah substation.
