A WARNING over the risk of flooding in Cleveleys has pricked the conscience of pebble thieves.

Wyre Council, the Environment Agency and representatives from Rossall Beach Residents and Community Group raised concerns over the coastline’s natural sea defence being damaged by people loading their car boots up with stones from Rossall Beach.

But after the problem was highlighted in The Gazette, it seems someone felt burdened with a guilty conscience and was spotted putting pebbles back onto the beach.

Jane Littlewood, chairman of Rossall Beach Residents and Community Group, said: “It’s been a really hot topic.

“A resident who lives overlooking the beach saw someone putting some pebbles back. We’re really pleased someone’s conscience has been twanged.

“I think people just needed some clarity.”

Witnesses have seen the thieves using snow shovels to scoop pebbles into sacks or re-enforced bags throughout the summer.

Wyre Council officers have taken photographs of offenders and passed them to the police to investigate.

Coun David Walmsley, Jubilee ward councillor, said he was happy the message had been taken on board.

He said: “I’m pleased the message has received such a wide circulation.

“Hopefully this will mean the trouble will subside.

“The reality is the Environment Agency confirmed our concerns.

“The sea wall is past its best – if we didn’t have the protection of the beach material, we would be in trouble.”
