Mystery over body in the water

The body of a man was recovered from under a jetty on the River Wyre

POLICE are appealing for help to identify the body of a man washed up at Fleetwood.

Police were alerted after a member of the public spotted the dead man in the River Wyre off the old Pandoro ferry slipway at around 3pm on Saturday.

It comes just a week after another body was found on Fleetwood beach, that of Blackpool man Paul Morris who was tragically swept out to sea on New Year’s Day.

Officers say the dead man found on Saturday, who is unconnected to Mr Morris’s death, was floating at the water’s edge adjacent to the pontoon jetties.

The body was recovered by RNLI crew members and was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

It is thought the man, believed to be between 55 and 70 years of age, had been in the water for less than 24 hours.

At this stage, officers have been unable to identify him and are appealing to anyone who thinks they may be able to help to come forward.

Det Insp Gareth Willis said: “Sadly, we have not yet been able to identify this gentleman and we are very keen to try and trace his family so we are appealing to anyone who may have any information that might be able to help to contact us.

“We are not treating the death as suspicious and we have not had any people reported missing to us that match this man’s description within Lancashire so any information the public may have would be appreciated.”

The dead man was of slim to medium build and had receding wavy, grey hair.

He has two distinctive brown coloured moles, one in the centre of his chest and the other on his side in the area of the right rib cage.

He doesn’t have any tattoos or scars and has slightly protruding teeth.

When he was found, he was wearing a Tom Hagen brown and cream striped polo shirt with a brown collar, a navy blue tank top with a light blue border around the neck, burgundy clip braces, a Marks & Spencer navy blue zip up cardigan, and black or navy blue Brook Taverner corduroy trousers.

He was also wearing black Clarkes active airman lace-up shoes, a white metal watch and bracelet and was carrying a red Swiss army knife.

Det Insp Willis added: “I would ask anyone who recognises the description of this man or anyone who thinks they may have seen him in recent days to come forward and contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancashire Police on 101.
