PUB giant JD Wetherspoon is opening its new venue in Cleveleys next week – with the creation of 50 new jobs.

The company has spent £1m developing the outlet, on the site of the former Kwik Save store, Victoria Road West.

The pub, The Jolly Tars, will be managed by Blackpool-born Julie Rodgers.

Julie was previously manager at two Wetherspoon pubs in the area– The Trawl Boat Inn in St Annes and The Thomas Drummond in Fleetwood.

She said: “I am looking forward to welcoming customers into The Jolly Tars and I’m confident it will be a good addition to the town’s social scene.”

The new pub’s name refers to wartime open air shows, which were highly popular during the summer seasons.

The ‘Jolly Tars Concert Party’ was the best known show to visit Cleveleys between the wars.

A nine-strong family team, the Jolly Tars regularly entertained huge crowds on the promenades. Their ‘Great Benefit Night Programme’ in August 1931 attracted a 2000-strong audience.

The new pub will specialise in real ale, serving a wide range of beers, including those from local and regional brewers.

It will be open from 8am until midnight (Sunday to Thursday) and 8am until 1am (Friday and Saturday).

Food will be served throughout the day, until 10pm.

Children, accompanied by an adult, will be welcome in the pub until 9pm throughout the week, with last orders for food at 8pm.

As a condition of the licence, both the adult and child must order a meal.

The Jolly Tars will be wheelchair accessible and have a specially-adapted toilet for people with disabilities.

The pub features one bar, with a large feature back bar fitting, as well as a pavement cafe-style area to the front of the premises, where smoking is permitted.

Photos and information boards relating to the history and characters of the area will be displayed, as well as work by local glassblower John Ditchfield and commissioned artwork by Tina Warren.

Next month Lloyds’ new premises named Layton Rakes will open in Blackpool. It is part of a multi-million pound investment set to transform Market Street – branded Blackpool’s most violent street on the Government’s crime website.

The pub is set to open on Friday July 22.
