Julie’s £1,000 gift in memory of Gwen

A FLEETWOOD woman has used her interest in researching family trees to raise £1,000 for the Macmillan Windmill Unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Julie Dalton has been raising money for the unit after being inspired by her sister, Gwen Meehan, who was treated on the unit after becoming ill with cancer.
Julie hoped that Gwen would be with her when she made the presentation to the unit last week.
But sadly, she died in August, aged 64, before the presentation could be made.
Gwen, a mum-of-two who lived on Bayside, Fleetwood, was also a keen fund-raiser for the centre and had previously done sponsored swims to raise cash.
Julie, 54, of Victoria Street, visited the unit, with Gwen’s husband George, to present the £1,000.
She said: “I’ve been doing family trees for people since the 175th anniversary of Fleetwood.
“I’ve been interested in genealogy for the past 10 years and I started doing the family trees in January of last year.
“Gwen wanted to be here today when I presented the cheque but unfortunately she passed away in August.
“I’ve raised £500 from doing the trees and then a very kind gentleman, who didn’t wish to be named, gave me £500 for the unit so I’m very grateful to him.
“I wanted to come here to present the money because of the care she was given and it’s nice to be able to do something in her memory.
“I wanted to help other patients; I know how expensive all the equipment is and she would have wanted me to help.”
Fundraising Manager Kathy Ancell said: “It’s wonderful Julie has put her own hobby and passion to good use to raise money in memory of her sister.
“Gwen was a fantastic fund-raiser for the unit and in the same way Julie will now be helping future patients who use the service.”
Gwen was the eldest of eight children and also came from Fleetwood.
Julie’s investigations have revealed some fascinating facts about her own family which she had no idea about beforehand.
Among the characters in her tree is a 16th century mayor of Manchester, George Travis, and an archdeacon of Chester, also George Travis, from the 18th century whose likeness is in a memorial plaque in Chester.
She even discovered a murderer in the family who was spared hanging back in Oldham because his crime was not premeditated!
