THE sun has come out for Fleetwood’s beach huts.
When the popular facilities were sold off by Wyre Council there was local opposition and families feared privatisation would mean they would lose access.
But eight years on the huts are full of happy families.
Enjoying a week in one of the huts was Rebecca Davenport who was with daughters Tillie-An and Georgia.
She said: “We have the beach here and it’s a shame not to use it.
“If there was someone who was wanting to sell one of the huts I think we would try to get it.
“It’s safe here and the kids can run in and out and enjoy themselves. We spent all day up here.
“When it was raining we stayed indoors and made cup cakes.”
The baking is possible because of the improvements made at many of the huts – including ovens and mini-kitchens – since Wyre Council sold 20-year leases for them.
At the time the leases fetched around £1,700 each and owners help towards their costs by renting them out when not in use.
One lease-holder is Dave Schofield of Queen’s Terrace.
He said: “All the interior has been done and there’s a new floor.
“Now I am looking at putting a new roof on.
“There is another 12 years to go before the lease ends.
“I was lucky to get it.
“A lady who had it was getting too old to look after it and I spotted her notice on the door.
“A lot of the huts have been improved and they are really nice inside. It looks like it has been a success.”
The beach huts are perfect for Tony Clowes of Broadway and his sons Ryan, Ben and Matthew.
Rental for two weeks is £200 but they have halved the cost by sharing with another family.
Mr Clowes said: “It’s great for the boys.
“They can run around and it’s completely safe.”
