TRIBUTES have been paid to the deputy mayor of Wyre who has died after a brave battle with cancer.

Coun Ian Perkin, who died in Trinity Hospice, was described as a councillor who “genuinely cared about his community.”

After serving in the police for 30 years, the 55-year-old was elected as the Staina ward councillor in the 2011 local elections.

Coun Peter Gibson, leader of Wyre Council, said: “Although Ian was only with Wyre for a short time, his willingness to make a difference was obvious from the start.

“He was a capable and proactive councillor who genuinely cared about his community and the people in it, becoming a great ambassador for the borough in the six months he served as deputy mayor.

“I believe he was destined for greater things on the council, a future cabinet member in the making.

“We have lost a true friend and Ian will be sadly missed both by fellow councillors and the officers he worked with.”

Coun Perkin’s career in the police force started as a police cadet when he lived in the Morecambe area.

When he passed out he spent much of his career in Fleetwood, Poulton and elsewhere on the Fylde Coast.

He worked as a traffic officer and at the peak of his career, he was inspector in charge at Poulton Police Station.

Coun Peter Murphy, who worked with Coun Perkin in the police, said: “He was an officer for 30 years and was totally dedicated to the role during all that time.

“He brought the same attitude with him to the council, throwing himself wholeheartedly into helping the whole of the area.”

Before his death, Coun Perkin had been a key supporter of Thornton Gala and had worked on the Thornton Action Plan to bring changes to the community.

Coun Don MacNaughton, lead member of the plan, said: “Ian was a well-respected councillor and deputy mayor of Wyre and had a great input into any council activities he took part in.

“He will certainly be missed, not only by the Thornton councillors but by the council as a whole.”

Coun Perkin, who died on January 11, is survived by his wife Eva, the deputy mayoress of Wyre.
