Appeal over bin fires

A SUSPECTED arson attack caused £10,000 of damage at a Fleetwood store.

And now police are appealing for witnesses to investigate how a blaze erupted in refrigeration equipment at the back of Tesco Express on Poulton Road.

The fire might have begun in a nearby wheelie bin, prompting the fire brigade to caution the public after a series of bin fires which were started deliberately.

Det Con Carl Pritchard said: “There was a lot of damage in terms of monetary value.

“The fire brigade has not been able to get to come to a specific conclusion as to what has caused the fire.

“But we are investigating it as suspicious until we know it isn’t. We are making inquiries to see if it was arson.”

The fire erupted at around 3am on Sunday August 26 and the damage to the refrigeration equipment meant that a large amount of stock in the shop had to be discarded.

Det Con Pritchard said: “We would like to hear from anyone who might have seen anything suspicious.

“There aren’t many people out at that time of night but there might just have been someone.”

The appeal comes as the fire service has highlighted a series of fires to wheelie bins in the area.

On Sunday at 10.30pm firefighters were summoned to a fire in a skip on Chaucer Road (above).

Crew Manager Kevin Warwick (inset) said: “We have had a spate of bin fires since April which have been started deliberately.

“They have been in an area from the Esplanade through to the area of Chaucer Road, Mount Road and Dryden Road.

“We are leafleting the public, asking them not to put their bins out the night before collection.

“I know it’s difficult because of some of the early pick-up times and if people could put their bins out as late as possible, it would help.”
